"Cottafavi is one of those confidential great directors almost nobody knows, except those who by
chance read something about him somewhere. A director who worked in popular genres (sword and sandal, historical films,
melodramas ... ) but injecting them with his culture, and treating them with respect and sobriety. 

This film
is one among thousands adaptation of Dumas' the Lady of the Camelias, set in Italy in the 50s. The courtesan's
character is interesting : she totally assumes her condition and profession, she has her own dignity ; Barbara Laage is
perfect for the part. The romantic lover is played by a non charismatic actor, who looks like Mr Nobody, which is
probably a clever way to make self identification easy for the male viewer. The direction is sober, almost dry, non
melodramatic despite of the subject. Classic. The finale is quite extraordinary filmed, and heartbreaking." By
